A parachuting accident and two emergency landings - none of them fatal - marred the Aerospace Africa and Defence 2002 exhibition and air show at the Waterkloof air force base during the weekend.

Two members of 44 Parachute Brigade of Tempe, Bloemfontein had to be taken to hospital on Saturday after a low-level jump that went wrong.

The second incident saw a Reserve Force pilot walk away virtually unharmed after an emergency landing in an SAAF Museum Harvard at midday on Sunday.

'I could hear him touching the top of the trees'
Colonel Jeff Earle, flying as part of a SAAF Heritage Flight, had to abort the flight because of mechanical problems. Seconds before the Harvard hit the ground he managed to eject and escape serious injury.

The aircraft, one of a Harvard display team taking part in the air show, lost

This got me checking my log books.

On 22 June 1954, I landed my SNJ-5C aboard the USS Monterey 6 times, after 6 passes.
