Standing by for pages and pages of anti-nav banter, but .....

Not being entitled to the military bridging package (DWMR only), has anyone done a full ATPL theory distance learning package recently? If so, any recommendations or horror stories?

I think I know the answer to this one but has any non-pilot managed to obtain a dispensation for reduced training requirements through CAA/TDA?

The only reduced requirements of which I'm aware are for the National PPL. Because I secured them from the CAA.

Your best course of action:

1. Obtain a NPPL
2. Upgrade it to JAR-FCL PPL(A). As you will be doing any upgrade from a NPPL obtained with 'licence allowances', quite how you do this 'by experience' has yet to be agreed. But I hope to sort it out in a couple of weeks' time.
3. Build sufficient hours to start the modular CPL course.
4. 'Distance learn' the ATPL theory. Try Bristol - everyone speaks very highly of Alex and Basil!
5. Complete your CPL.
6. Obtain an IR within 36 months of passing the ATPL(A) theory exam pass. Otherwise their validity will die.
7. Do a MCC course.
8. You will now have a CPL/IR with ATPL knowledge credit. Unless you find a way of building 500 hours multi-PILOT time, you won't be able to apply for an ATPL. But neither would some spotty kid from any CPL school...

Alternatively, leave the mob and enrol on a CPL/IR integrated course. Which is VERY expensive - but at least 1 navigator I know did this and is now flying for the airlines.....

I once told the then C-in-C STC that navigators had been trained to airline RHS standard with no problem - trouble was, after we'd trained them up to PPL standard, they'd had to leave the RAF to do the rest....

A final route - get approved for a cross-over and become one of the 2WMR. Pass your ME OCU, build 2000 hrs TT of which 1500 must be approved ME and 1000 of those as P1C. Then do JAR-FCL Air Law, pass a JAA Class 1 medical and fly your IR with a CAA observer. Fill out the forms, pay the money and a nice shiny ATPL comes back a week or so later.....

I should really have made my starting point clear. I already hold a JAA PPL(A) (plus FAA PPL(A)), Night, ME, IR with some 350hrs logged as pilot. I wasn't sure whether to go the CPL only route or spend a bit more money and get all of the ATPL theory out of the way now. I have more or less decided to go for the ATPL theory option to avoid having to take all 14 exams again at some later date (at £50 a throw!). What I am really after is first-hand experience of the distance learning products currently on the market.

... and I'm a bit old for a crossover!

Any takers?

I will concur with Beagle's comments regarding Bristol's ATPL ground school package as I bought this and started the course before the accreditation came into force last year. (Thankfully the only exam I had to sit was Air Law). It is very well constructed and laid out, arriving as the usual books and on CD. The backup from Alex and co is superb and I'm told that the crammer tuition at Bristol that comes as part of the deal is also excellent.

There were some initial problems with the JAR Air Law package as they had understandably based the course on the declared syllabus, however, the questions bore little or no resemblance to what the course was supposed to include. They gave me a copy of the Pooley's JAR book written by Dick Jennison as a stopgap while they changed their material, and this was fine.
