MoD spends millions to avoid the Welsh

Well, can't say I blame them.

Continuity of Education is a major problem for Service families whose children will have to change schools many times as they accompany their parents. Surely, it is not unreasonable that they should at least be taught in a language they understand. I spent a year Anglesey in 2011 and Welsh was the first language and English very much the second especially in the north of the island where Valley is.

No doubt PC would have complained even more if the flying training had been moved elsewhere. Just think about the effect that would have had on the local economy.

Thanks for that input ETOPS, but I can't agree.

As serving personnel, and ex-servers, are aware, education for their kids is disrupting, and learning and having to study in Welsh can be of no benefit whatsoever.
The world speaks - or at least can understand - English. Where else is Welsh spoken, on Mars?

Indeed, ETOPS. Modern terms such as 'wheel' and 'fire' probably aren't included in the Welsh vocabulary! It was fun listening to Jones-the-motor next to RAF Valley discussing automotive problems with his colleagues - every so often their Welsh conversation would include English words such as 'fuel filter' or 'alternator'.....

Great chap Jones-the-motor - he was once able to provide me with an accelerator cable for my MG Midget at 16:30 on a Friday, so I was able to drive down to London the following day.

I was watching a video of a house tour - YouTube in Norway - with the host and three other adults - all four spoke in their won languages - and when another visitor turned up there was cross talk

When the interview started they ALL continued in perfect 'english' - this is a common thing, but if you are going to learn another language at school don't force the English to speak Welsh

Nothing against the Welsh or Welsh - but there is a big world out there and other languages are available

This summer I have been conversing in english across Europe - fortunately

Five other languages were in play during the trip - but the default was english

Young people as 'gamers' are using english as their language of communication ... and that has NOTHING to do with England, GB, UK or USA

What is the cost of training aircrew these days? If just a couple decide to leave the service because they are unhappy with disrupted education for their children then stopping the school fee allowance would be false economy.

I was unaware that the Midget had such a device!

I read the article this morning. "MoD spends millions" yet in the first paragraph Alun Jones writes "around £1m" which in the second paragraph he writes the actual figure of "£1,019,000". Hardly millions then. I've put a complaint to the editor of the BBC News. That will give them a poke in the eye.

Wait 'til Auntie Beeb finds out how much is spent on sending kids to English speaking schools in other countries!

There are actually more Welsh speakers in South Wales than North Wales, it's just that the percentage is less due to the population density.

I'm so glad my son was never forced to be educated in German, or Malay. Come to think of it, I wasn't forced to learn in German either - the excellent British Forces Education Service saw to that. I was too young - pre-school - to have to learn Canajun-eh? when Dad was on exchange with the RCAF.

In Wales, it's English that's 'another language'.
