Meanwhile on the Korean Peninsula

New War Worries: South Korean President Urges Troops to 'Smash' North Korean Enemy, Shoot First, Report Later if Attacked (msn.com)
Amid the ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has issued a stern response, emphasizing a proactive approach in case of an attack.

While recently addressing the Fifth Army Infantry Division at the Demilitarized Zone, Yoon urged immediate retaliation if the South is targeted, stating, "Immediately retaliate in response and report it later." He emphasized the need to swiftly “smash the enemy’s desire for provocations immediately on the ground.”

The longstanding accusations of provocative behavior between North and South Korea continue, with each side pointing fingers at the other.

Yoon highlighted North Korea's constitution, which explicitly mentions invasion and first-strike use of nuclear weapons — a unique stance globally.

Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for the acceleration of war preparations, citing "extreme" military conditions on the Korean Peninsula, according to Yonhap News Service.

South Korean first responders recently conducted drills in preparation for a potential North Korean attack on Seoul, the capital located just 24 miles from the DMZ, RBC Ukraine reported.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon supports a robust response, even advocating for South Korea to possess its own nuclear weapons, according to The Telegraph.

Se-hoon points as an example to the recent Israel-Hamas conflict, during which Israel's advanced defense system struggled against unconventional attacks.

President Yoon, however, opposes the idea, preferring to strengthen alliances with the U.S. and Japan.

On Dec. 28, there were key personnel changes in South Korea's security apparatus. Chang Ho-jin was appointed as the new National Security Adviser, replacing Cho Tae-yong, who was nominated for the directorship of South Korea's National Intelligence Service.

Additionally, Lee Kwan-sup became Yoon's new chief of staff, despite having held the position of director of national policies for only about a month.

North Korea has fired over 200 artillery shells into the buffer zone near South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island,

Residents, numbering roughly 2,000 people living on the island, were initially instructed to seek shelter, this has been upgraded to immediate evacuation orders.

The Reason for the evacuation order is reportedly not because of the earlier artillery fire, but instead due to radio communications of North Korean communications by South Korean Intelligence suggesting that they have been ordered to open fire directly against settlements on the island if the South Korean military respond to in kind with live fire drills.

Two articles in the Guardian today. Snippets:-
North Korea claims to have fired solid-fuel hypersonic missile in latest weapons test

North Korea said Monday it had successfully test-fired a new ballistic missile tipped with a hypersonic manoeuvrable warhead, in what would be the latest breakthrough in its pursuit of advanced weaponry.

The launch, Pyongyang’s first known weapons test this year and its first ever test of a solid-fuel hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), was detected by Seoul’s military Sunday afternoon.

A short report in state media said that the solid-fuel IRMB was “loaded with a hypersonic manoeuvrable controlled warhead.”

The test was meant to verify “the gliding and manoeuvring characteristics” of the warhead and the “reliability of newly developed multi-stage high-thrust solid-fuel engines,” said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
Unification with South Korea no longer possible, says Kim Jong-un

North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, has called for a change to the constitution to identify South Korea as the “number one hostile state”, ending the regime’s commitment to unifying the Korean peninsula.

In a speech to the supreme people’s assembly – North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament – Kim said he no longer believed unification was possible and accused the South of attempting to foment regime change and promote unification by stealth. In another sign of quickly deteriorating ties between the two Koreas, which ended their 1950-53 war with a truce but not a peace treaty – Kim said: “We don’t want war, but we have no intention of avoiding it.
”The state-run KCNA news agency said on Tuesday that
North Korea would close three agencies that oversee unification and inter-Korean tourism: the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification, the National Economic Cooperation Bureau and the Mount Kumgang International Tourism Administration.

This is Yongpyeongdo 2.0 now for bombardment. When Kim J.U. feels a little redundant, and needs to spice up the kimchee slightly, Yongpyeong Island gets a work over. The waters around yongpyeong have been the scene of a couple of naval skirmishes, that have left a mess behind.
