Austria to Order C-390s
Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner announced today that Austria 🇦🇹 has decided to replace their aging Lockheed C-130Ks with Embraer C-390s instead of purchasing C-130Js.
I was at Airpower in my other neck of the woods year ago, and saw the C-390 Millenum on static, (same a/c that was at RIAT and Farnborough) so here are my photos ...so must have made an impression
cheers
Embraer
and here is pic from Embraer FB page
cheers

I agree it looks like a nice aircraft and no doubt could fill some roles
But what are you willing to give up to get them? - because that's the question that the Treasury will ask

I was more thinking another potential customer for some of the 15 -Js sitting at Marshall's struck off DESA's list. But A-400M can do the job, nice aircraft as the 390 is, as we have been assured there will be no gaps to fill.
I been told indonesia is the prime candidate for purchase of 12 of them

That's four European nations now flying or having ordered the C-390, and three of them have previously been operators of the Hercules. Small numbers for sure, but perhaps Lockheed Martin may have to start paying attention sooner or later.

Indonesia, like a large number of developing countries, tends to order from a wide range of suppliers. the reasons for doing so are often .............. opaque
Italy used to do the same thing
They already have C-130's. They have 5 new Js on order (3 delivered) They have australia's old H models which we sold to Indonesia when we got the Js, UK ordered these J's around the same time. They also have a couple of hundred million in defence loan guarantees from the UK.

Absolutely - I know from personal experience that not everyone in such countries is corrupt................... but it's more likely.

It's also a question of not wanting to be beholden to one nationality of supplier especially if you are not a member of an alliance and might be left out in the cold.
While we are getting off topic and indonesia is not getting these. Indonesia absolutely does buy from a variety of sources. During the timor shambles, the US blocked support and a spares for their F-16. Forced them to goto russia and buy russian. Considering how bad the spare parts market is for russian aircraft historically this just a bit better than nothing. Thats why they went Rafale, they have F-16 as main airforce supported by F-15ex and Rafales. With maybe Su's. If they get on the wrong side of the US again they will have the rafales and SU's still able to source parts for
