Why do people insist on using the '@' sign before names? Didn't they learn how to write in English when they were at school?

Interesting that the Reds appear to be flying Hawk T2s, a sign of the future?

Or just the RAF PR department’s lack of attention to detail?

The elongated nose and wingtip missiles on the graphic are what has prompted the T2 suggestion. I notice that 8 and 9 are planning to fly asymmetrically by the same token. That seems unnecessarily risky to me.

(No I’m not being serious).

There will be more than the 9 Typhoons shown on the graphic. They have been practicing a special formation over the North Sea involving 20-plus aircraft. They don't want to reveal what it is until later today. A "C III R" would seem appropriate, but this might need more like 30 'phoons!.

What’s the betting that the heavies get airborne ridiculously early to have their lunch in the Hold? 🤔

Why not- seems very sensible to me. After all it is over lunchtime.

But why are A330s, C17s etc holding so low? Is there no commercial consideration in their airline? Asking for a taxpayer.

because it’s less disruptive for CAT than holding in the London TMA.

Well the purpose of the hold is to fettle the timing to be ready to Push on time (to the nearest 5 sec I guess) and so the flypast sequence runs to time. A higher hold complicates the timing as the IAS/TAS relationship (and actual wind vector) changes as you descend. The whole run in from ivo Southwold is flown pretty much level at the assigned altitude.

That said, it shouldn't take more than 2 or 3 holds to nail the timing. 😳

Holding at endurance speed and not blocking the airways for commercial traffic, the slightly higher fuel burn at the lower altitudes more than compensates for not making life harder for ATC.

H and Ken: thanks for responding and I grudgingly accept your explanations. Low: fair point although much of the cost does generate economic activity within the UK (notwithstanding all that non-UK hardware involved) and maybe there is an incalculable benefit of social cohesion with a brief distraction for people struggling with their bills. Next year should we just hire a skywriter who can spell CR?

Non-military poster now retracting head below parapet.
