It is very gratifying to see that members have noted my absence and have been thinking about me. As you see I am still alive and well. However I am sorry to say that Mrs TTN has not been well and is in fact suffering from vascular dementia. Her health has been in decline for a few years now, and she is now living in a care home nearby. She is being well looked after and is not in any discomfort, and my son and I visit her several times a week. You will understand that while she was at home and I was acting as one of her carers I rather let activities such as following things on PPRuNe slide somewhat , but now that she is receiving full time care, I can resume normal service,if I may put it that way.

Thanks again,

TTN

OBE for WO1 (GSM) Vernon Stokes - Garrison Sergeant Major of London District - the mastermind behind so many excellent ceremonials since 2015.

Very very unusual for a WO to become OBE ............. does anyone know of a precedent please?
Well done indeed.

Doesn’t the GSM hold some weird hybrid rank so he has the status of a Major as well ? Need someone from the Guards to explain.

I have no idea about precedent, but managing/organising his part of QEII funeral and KCIII Coronation seems a heavy load of responsibility … well handled. 👍

The seniority/ status of the most senior WO 1 appointments is rather opaque, due to copying in part the USA arrangements.

Further complicated by the first appointee as Senior Enlisted Advisor to Chief of Staffs Committee [SEAC] who indeed was a hybrid major dressed as a weird compromise and with the ugliest badge ever invented. He resigned in unfortunate circumstances. Below that are Command Sergeant Majors, essentially one for each major subdivision such as RA, RLC etc. I think these also have deferred LE commissions in the bank. There are about 30 such. Again, weird appointment badges.
Another subset is GSM Londdist and the Academy SM .......... I do not think these have a commission.
The prime loser in all this is the Conductor, who could once make a spirited if spurious defence of being the most senior WO appointment. He now has to doff his cap to a shed load of WO Is.

I fully expect the above is out of date: the army and RM change the pecking order and badges as often as they change their socks.

Try Mr Stokes's predecessor as Garrison Sergeant Major London District, Billy Mott, also OBE MVO and subsequently Commandant of Cadets and Garrison Sergeant Major at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA.

Point of order, it's not possible to hold both an MBE and an OBE as they are two ranks in the same Order. The insignia of the lower ranking award are supposed to be returned following promotion to the higher level.

With the advent of John Major's classless society and the abolition of the MM and DFM etc and what proved to be the temporary suspension of the related BEM I think there was a sentiment in some places that this devalued the rank of MBE and so appointments to OBE became more generous.

PS I didn't see the much deserved award(s) of the MHDOIF - but as PO Prune said, ' If the cap fits, it won't fall over deaf ears.'

I suspect that Dctyke meant that the Royal Air Force Warrant Officer was first awarded an MBE and subsequently was promoted within the Order. It would be interesting to know what rules applies to promotion within the Order if one is in the military division and the other in the civilian division because of the significant difference in the ribbon, and even more interesting if the military award had been awarded for gallantry and qualified for the silver oak-leaf emblem.

Tankertrashnav was the acknowledged site expert on such matters, but has not posted since November 2022. I have a feeling that he had unfortunately been experiencing some ill health, but regrettably I have no knowledge concerning his circumstances.

Me too, his long silence is rather concerning.

Re Military and Civil division, JSP761 was silent on the matter other than that cadet force school staff instructors and adult instructors recommendations are through the civil division machinery; RFA civilians are awarded civil division but from the military division allocation.
