Beverley Woes
Possibly a re-working of our departure from Plymouth Roborough after a BoB display. It was early evenng, Roborough was a grass field and quite wet. To maximise our take-off available run we had reversed right up to the boundary fence (tailplane overhanging the road (!). Tried to set full power for takeoff and, with the parking brake set, we started to slide forward with the wheels locked. Gave up the struggle and went for it (successfully) followed by a V2 climb - one of aviation's more impressive manoeuvres !
Re. 'Timber' Woods, I had the pleasure of watching his retirement flight at Brough. when we went to pick up one of ours after a 'heavy' check. Three dimensional skill and intimate knowledge of variou building heights made for a unique display

When I was on ATC Summer Camp at RAF Finningley on or about 1973, I seem to remember a Beverley painted in a desert colour scheme with a black Scorpion painted on the nose. We did get an opportunity to climb inside but it's condition appeared to be beyond flight.
Does anyone who was serving there in the Varsity/Dominie days remember it?
As an aside I still have the chart that was given to me after the Navex in the Varsity, (tail-code Yankee). Also got a ride in a Hastings C1.

Finningley had one of the RAF's Regional Collections of aircraft (others being Colerne, Cosford and St Athan) but as Finningley was due to host the 1977 Jubilee Review of the RAF, the collection was dispersed to make room. The Beverley was too big/expensive to move and was scrapped.
Ah yes ! ... smelly scorpions and Jane's panties ! Somewhat oddly, I served on 84 twice and on Beverleys but not as a combination !

At the time of the changeover from ABLE, BAKER to ALPHA, BRAVO, for a short while, the only serviceable Bev operating from K'sar was GOLF. It was regularly crewed with a signaller who with local stations used the callsign MIKE OSCAR BLUNDERBUSS XMAS GURGLE. (possibly apocryphal !)

I was also on ATC Summer camp at Finningley in '73 also. We went inside the Beverley, it had a strong damp, dusty smell. I well remember it. They also had a Shackleton and an Argosy at the time. Not surprised it was scrapped.
