US Army High Capacity Air Ambulance trials

Back in the late 80s, the US Army carried out trials with a CASA 212 (there was one anyhow with AFSOC at Pope doing stuff with JFK Special Forces students anyhow at same time) to see if it could bridge the gap from a Dustoff U/HH-60A to field hospital on the battlefield.

SASless does this ring a bell with you?

cheers

Isn't that what the Shorts Sherpa eventually fullfilled amongst other roles, it went up in competition against the CASA 212 for the European supply network and lost out to the Sherpa.

Not exactly my area of interest.

Some general observations re the CASA 212 and the US Army Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg.....the 212 (either Military or Civilian) has been. and until recently was used for support of HALO/Free Fall Parachuting.

Recently, the Co-Pilot of a civilian leased 212 was killed when he fell from that aircraft following a hard landing at Raeford North Carolina adjacent to Fort Bragg.

Mass casualty evacuation was always a part of the CH-47 Mission Set and the 212 would have a longer range probably but would require an landing area akin to an airfield of sorts.

When you begin to talk of experimental programs one has to be careful to understand they sometimes are cooperative efforts between multiple three letter American Government agencies and thus the "cover story" may not always be indicative of the true nature of the program.

I livetin an interesting part of the State....Marines to the south and west of us, Navy (and SEALS) north of us, and the Army with SF and Delta Force and the 82nd Airborne to the west of us and some Air Force bases west of us..

At one point we had an Army Reserve Boat unit. here in town that provided much of the Army Marine Support vessels for the Persian Gulf Wars. (Army Sailors.....imagine that!)

Lots of training areas for in the area for Marine, Navy, Air Force, and Army Aviation, coastal beaches and wilderness areas for other training.

One example.....SEAL Team Six used a location not far from here to train for the Osama bin Laden raid.

Lots goes on....none of which is made known to the public with except the one exception of the regular Robin Sage SF Training exercise that goes on around the Uwharrie National Forest area that includes local residents and local government agencies.
