Forced landing portobello beach Edinburgh 40s/50s
Further to fantastic information about my dad ( RAF Pathfinders 97 Squadron ) Can I ask if anyone can give me any information about my dad James Pymar Billing, who made a forced landing on Portobello beach in Edinburgh in a light aircraft in the 40s or 50s ? I remember dad showing me a picture and article in the newspaper ( Edinburgh Evening News ? )
I remember him being really brassed off that despite a perfect landing, the paper said that he had damaged the wings, he hadn't, the light single had upturned wingtips.
I think he was stationed at Leuchars or possibly Turnhouse at the time.
Many thanks, Matt.

You might be better contacting the newspaper, they will hold an archive.
Whilst I cannot spot a specific mention consistent with the details provided via https://air-britain.com/pdfs/militar...and_and_NI.pdf a closer look by the OP might be worthwhile, as well as seeking information from the Edinburgh Evening News and The Scotsman. As an even longer shot, Edinburgh History - Portobello - 1920s to 1950s might also be worth a look. It's certainly a trip down Memory Lane for Embra folk!
I do recall my Father telling me about a forced landing on the farmland immediately to the North of Lauriston Castle in my native Edinburgh, probably in about the mid 1950s, but that land is more of a raised beach than the beach at Party, and I also have a feeling that it was a twin-engined aircraft, and possibly even an Anson.

Many thanks UJ this should give me many hours of recollections. I was born early '50's no more than 2 miles on the coast from 'bello towards Leith. So although I would be far to young to remember any details of the OP request I do fondly (.bloody freezing) remember the pool, where I learnt to swim and dive to recover a shilling thrown for me by my Grandad ...happy days
