Lex Brown RIP

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of Flt It Alexander Daniel "Lex" Brown MBE AFC RAF Ret'd. He fought a brief but valiant battle with a particularly aggressive form of cancer, and died peacefully yesterday morning. A week earlier the clinicians had not expected him to last the night, but it was a measure of the man that he fought to the very end.

I’m very sad to hear this. I’d not seen Lex for many years, but he was an absolute legend. RIP.

Sad news for all of us.
A true character of the SH Force.
Legend barely does him justice.

Oh, b*gger - not what you would ever have wished for an amazing individual. A unique combination of skill, good attitude and - occasionally - luck (9mm hole in the foot that didn't do any major damage..). The world is a lesser place without him in it.

Lex Brown (born Maybole, Ayrshire) is a Scottish businessman. A former decorated RAFhelicopter pilot,[1] he came to public attention after buying Tioram Castle, in Moidart, for £300,000 in 1997.

There followed years of high-profile conflicts with Historic Scotland, Highland Council and other interested parties,[2] including a public inquiry in 2002 and an appeal to the Scottish Governmentin 2006. Following a change of personnel at Historic Scotland.,[3] Brown renewed discussions with HS of his plans to reroof and live in Castle Tioram, though these are still at an early stage.[4]

Brown was mostly brought up overseas, in Egypt and Ghana, where his father worked as a civil engineer.[1] His Gaelic-speaking, west highland mother endowed Brown with a respect for his highland heritage.

After 20 years in the armed forces, Brown farmed on Loch Lomondside before making a fortune in the air cargo and oil exploration business.[1]

RIP Lex. A true legend. So many memories of his exploits on 230 in the '70s. I'm sure there will be many tributes starting "I'll never forget..." So I'll start with the time he was discussing a bird strike he had just had in a Puma. "It was the bird's fault" he said "It stood up"..

I remember it well. We were saying "Goodbye" to RAF Colerne by carrying out a low go-around along the main runway, wheels up, at low level and high speed. Suddenly, there was an enormous bang, and we went IMC in the cockpit as a large crow joined us by crashing through the lowest LH optical panel, passing between my legs and disturbing years of collected detritus beneath my seat. When removed, the panel had a perfect hole in the shape of the bird's silhouette, and was hung from the ceiling of the sqn ops room for some time.

Reports of a rabbit strike are probably untrue. But with Lex...

RIP Lex, a true friend and legend. You kept me highly amused during the 70's and you will be sorely missed.

Intellectual sexual Lexual (his favourite introduction to a woman) and I joined 230 on same day in 1973. Founder members of Flying Officerís Liberation Army, first allowed to fly together in 1976 (in Belize and got CinCís Commendation!) Very nearly killed me in mid-air on PNG in Denmark but was a really skilled pilot who frequently pushed the limits of his aircraft, his supervisors and his friendships. One of a kind, much loved and so sadly departed.

Oh that is so sad. There are just so many stories to tell. Example - in bar for happy hour with thick fog out side. Heard sound of Puma. All went quite. Five mins later Lex jumped through the window followed by his SD crew. They left the aircraft on the threshold as it was too foggy to taxi to 33 dispersal!

Desperately sad news, loved flying with Lex in the 70ís on 230. Great fun in NI, Belize, and all the Exercise areas in UK. Heart and soul of the Tiger Sqn along with the rest of FOLA.

Lex had a generally friendly 'banter-feud' with another pilot, whom I'll call, 'The Pine Marten'. They were always trying to one-up on each other. Eyebrows were raised when Lex let off a smoke cannister in the Pine Marten's car. Makes a mess. Allegedly.
