Worth mentioning that Flt Lt John Halstead held three of the four FAI records set between the UK and the Falklands, using VC10 XV109 and several refuellings courtesy of 101 Sqn. Those records were set just before Christmas 1987, see here.

Sorry to hear of his passing. RIP.

Sad News.

I have good memories of both Brize Flying Club and John.

Very sad to hear of John's passing. He was a stalwart both of the Brize Flying Club and On-Track Aviation, he had an impressive RAF career as a QFI and VC10 pilot and also managed to squeeze in time to fly some historic jets despite a second careeer with Virgin Atlantic. A total aviation person who was always ready to help students and very professional.

He will be sadly missed; condolences to family and friends.

R.I.P.

I joined Virgin with John in ‘94 and flew with him several times on the 747. He also did my CRI check-out in 2014 -and passed me!

A consummate aviator and thoroughly nice guy, RIP John.

I did my JAR PPL(A) skills test with John. An absolute gent. I’m also sure that I will have been one of his ‘chicks’ in his Texaco previously too. RIP John

To All who have sent their condolences, many thanks, I will pass them on to John's wife and Family. I am giving the Eulogy at his Funeral next week, so any 'Stories' gratefully received.

Well I did write something, then deleted it as it seemed churlish.

Sorry I am not clever enough to make this any bigger. CFS 276 Course - the last one at Little Rissington. John is far left on the centre row and one of 5 of us posted there when the Britannias were sold.

I only knew of John in passing, but I heard great things of him. But please can we get his surname correct as HALSTEAD and not HALSTED as in the thread title at present? It would be good to at least get his name right!

Per Ardua, John

I knew John in many worlds; as a QFI, a tanker driver and on the Classic 747 at Virgin. A great instructor and pilot, he was always helpful and great fun to be around. I wish I could remember some of the very silly conversations we had at times! RIP, mate. It was fun.

I will be thinking of John today. I first met him on an early line training trip at VS on the B742 and last saw him when flew a practise IR with him at Oxford in 2017. He was a consummate professional and a really nice person. RIP, John.
