Apparently quite a few were small people sitting on parents' laps, so that also helped.

A further technical question for you all if I may.
Do heavy aircraft such as airliners or the C-17 use the weight on wheels sensors to measure the actual all up weight of the aircraft in real time, and then display that figure on the flight computer, EFIS thingey?
MD-11 had an optional weight indication system that used strain gauges in the main gear axles. I don't know how many were delivered with that option. My recollection is that it interfaced directly with the FMC but it's all a while ago.
