Wg Cdr Fred Hoskins
Wing Commander Fred Hoskins, the first CO of a Puma sqn has died (Sun 20 Aug) age 92.
Fred was an apprentice, became a pilot, serving in Malaya on 33 - then a Hornet sqn. In 1965 he converted to helicopters and assumed command of 103 Sqn during the latter part of the campaign in Borneo. Later tours in the Gulf and MOD and then selected to return to 33 Sqn as the first boss of the Puma era.
Fred left the RAF and qualified as a solicitor and practised in Salisbury. He was active in ex-service affairs, including SSAFA-Forces Help and was awarded an OBE for that work.
He was instrumental in getting a group of ex-RAF rotaries together under the banner: "The Old Rotors" and he wrote or contributed to several books.
