Operation PEDESTAL

Today is also significant in Malta, as today was the day that the battered survivors of the convoy, including the tanker SS Ohio, finally made it into Grand Harbour, Valletta. Never forgotten by the Maltese, as the fuel from Ohio enabled the little battered Island to keep fighting at sea and in the air.

It’s an astonishing story, the book “Malta Convoy” is the best one I’ve read on it.

In the film "The Malta Story", at about 1:20 into it, there is actual film of the "Ohio" entering Grand Harbour.

'After the Battle's' Malta edition gives an excellent account of this.

Yep iirc a destroyer each side and a tug up front, the tug didn’t help much and they gave up on it in the end.

My father thought it was a bit of a turning point at the time as a nineteen year old RAF fitter watching it come in.
