Medical Reqs for joining as a pilot

Just a quick query for those of you in the know.
I have a mate looking to join as a pilot, but when he applied 12 months ago he unfortunately admitted to having taken medication for hayfever. The RAF told him he had met all other criteria at that stage, but he would have to reapply in about 2 years, due to the hayfever. He reapplied recently, but has the same response. He doesnt really want to wait another 12 months, and is thinking of joing as a groundy, and then looking to re-role. Possibly not the best option I dont think. Anyone know any way around this issue? Also, can anyone tell me definitely, the cut off age for a pilot, as this may be an issue by the time he can re-apply.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers
