South African Air Force C-130BZ crashes at Goma Airport in the Dem Rep Congo. All OK.
A South African Air Force (SAAF) C-130BZ has crashed at Goma Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. All 67 passengers and crew on board are reportedly safe.

These planes are over 60 years old. She came out of major check in November, has flown ex RSA to Egypt in Dec, Cuba earlier this month, and now crew rotation in Africa.
1ST Accident in the history of 28 SQN. The problem is that there are only 2 or 3 Serviceable at any 1 time, due to budget constraints. This means that the lift capacity has been severely hampered, and might have to pay big dollars now to move the UN Troops around the DRC.

Quite right. They should have held onto the Transalls. Capability is now threatened. Together with these hassles, no maritime capability either. No replacement for the Shackleton which went into retirement in 1984.
Bit gloomy and some observers wearing hats and rain coats. Slick runway?
Seems like a KC-390 would be a good choice capability and politically wise, if they could afford it.

Good to hear of no serious casualties and given locations reputation it would appear that response of Emergency crew was commendable and will allow a reasonable recovery of valuable kit

They don't mess about with closing the airfield until everything is cleared up. You have the airport fire crew still foaming down the wreckage and a four jet is lining up to take off.
