On Friday I was at the Bournemouth Air Show (minus Red Arrows this year) with some friends of my daughter. They were due to fly back to their home in Toronto yesterday and were hoping to see the Red Arrows in Toronto on Monday.

Quick question (or two) about the Blue Angels after viewing the posted video.
What's the thinking with using a boom mike instead of a mask? I'd have thought a mask would offer greater protection in the event of having to eject?

They are rare to come over to Europe, AFAIK first time they came to Uk was 1973 RAF Bentwaters Air Show in the days of the F-4B Phantom II then probably somewhere 2 decades later..and was it 2006 or 10 they performed at Leeuwarden in NL?

Here are my photos from May's show
Cheers

Going by a fellow nicknamed "Meat Hook" who did an Exchange Tour and flew with the Blues as a Passenger on several flights.....no G suits or O2 masks due to hose routing can cause a binding of the flight controls and the speed jeans inflating and deflating also interfere with very fine control adjustments.

He noted flying 36 inch separation as a norma does not allow for much tolerance and thus the precaution of doing without the mask and jeans.

He noted after a flight with the Blues.....he ached for days afterwards due to pulling up too 9G's during the flights.

Physical fitness is a very important aspect of the the job.

The 'Blues' flew the F-4J, not the B...
