CH-53E Fire Imperial County

Another CH-53E destroyed (I’m presuming it’s Cat 5!). Looking at the video they must have been sweating on getting it on the ground and getting out.

Miramar-based Marine helicopter catches fire in flight

A Miramar-based Marine helicopter caught fire in flight about 1 p.m. Thursday before making an emergency landing at the Imperial County Airport, the Marines said in a statement.

No one was injured and the Imperial County Fire Department extinguished the fire, the statement said.

The Marine CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter is attached to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465. Marine 1st. Lt. Fredrick Walker, a spokesman for the 3rd Marine Air Wing, did not say how many Marines were on board. The helicopter can carry as many as 55 people, he said, but it typically flies with a crew of four.

The incident is under investigation.
