Vice chief of Indian Air Force accidentally shoots himself in the thigh

Vice Air Chief Marshal Shirish Baban Deo accidentally shot himself in the thigh on Wednesday, reported news agency ANI. Deo was immediately rushed to Delhi’s Army Research and Referral hospital in critical condition.

The Vice Air Chief Marshal was currently undergoing treatment in the hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. At the time of writing the news, there was no official statement from the Air Force but sources said that the incident happened while he was cleaning his gun.

Deo was born in Nagpur Maharashtra and commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force in 1979. He assumed the office on 31 December 2016 from Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa.

He's lucky that he's not Russian, or he would have shot himself accidentally in the thigh 5 times!

Shouldn't he have entrusted such a risky task to someone expendable?

Had it been reported he was from the RAF I would have expected him to have shot himself in a foot.

During GW1, an RSAF aircrew member, while checking his pistol, put a bullet through the ops room ceiling. Closely followed by another, this time in cockpit, who decided to remove the magazine from his pistol and dropped the rounds onto the cockpit floor.....

On another of my tangents...here is a link to comedian Jim Jeffries talking about gun control in the USA. No political points from me, but it is funny and well observed (those offended by Australians using bad language, just don't visit or pretend that it is an Aussie slip cordon).

Actually dear boy....we usually shoot someone else in the ass!

Being a gun owner....I do get a good laugh out of these un-intentional self inflicted wounds.....especially when done on Video!

They gave me a .38 Smith & Wesson and 18 rounds. I handed the lot back intacta when I finished 'ops'. Never even loaded the chambers, left the ammo in the box (much safer that way).

After about 40 years of competition pistol shooting, burning maybe 10k+ rounds a year at peak, I guess I was a reasonably competent handler of a pistol.

I can sympathise with a ‘Vice Air Chief Marshal’, whatever that is, who probably just carries one for effect. And as noted upthread ... why was HE cleaning it? Bearer’s day off? Or was this annual GDT?

WTF ever happened to "Always assume the weapon is made ready" and "Carry out NSPs" FFS?

Feckin idiot DESERVES to be hurting. He's obviously too bloody stupid to carry a firearm.

Just wondering why he'd be carrying a loaded pistol? One would assume that would be reserved for those on Ops or at least flying in harms way???

The lads and lasses over Syria carry something more punchy than the old PPK.
