Flew XV730 in Sharjah on a great sortie. Called out to do a Medevac on a Saturday; I was the duty pilot for being a bad boy!! The casualty was on the BP British Argosy which was due to be 80nm south of the southern tip of Masirah on the Monday! Flew via Nizwa where an Andover dropped fuel for us and night stopped at Masirah. Pick up was straighforward (we had a Shackleton as 'top cover' ). Just wondering if this was the longest Medevac undertaken by a Mk 2 Wessex.

I'd forgotten until I was reminded by another reference recently that XR 511 was one of four Wessi detached from 72 to the Sultan of Oman's Air Force (SOAF) from about March to December '74, to "assist" in the Dhofar War.
Unusually for such occasions - crews were all regular RAF - the aircraft were repainted in SOAF camo colours and with SOAF badges. Can't find a photo of 511, but this shows the paint job. (this one is actually XS 678)

"BW the Wessex on 240 OCU that was a replacement for one lost came form that part of the world, indeed they had simply oversprayed the two tone brown scheme as it was visible when we had a skin repair to do on the fuselage."

Nutty
the other three SOAF cabs were XR 525, XS 678 and XT 675 (not to be confused with XS 675 - which of course it often was!)
