IMHO, it's not a good idea. 16 mln sq km are more than enough to find testing grounds "in house". Things like AC-130 (or A-10 or Su-25) are better suited to deal with jihaddists. One more example of stupidity of higher command. Though the guys at the front line are brave indeed.

Do you really think it's there to engage jihaddis?

There will be benefits and disadvantages to both US and Russia.
Testing the new Russian 5th Gen PAK-FA also gives away information to the Raptors presently deployed there while providing the Russians with operational deployment lessons.
Will be a morale boot to both Russian forces deployed over there who have been taking some knocks, and Assad and his loyalists.

Complete and sad stupidity at the highest level.
How many fighters Jets do the rebels have?
0.000 => Correct.
The Russians completely misunderstood the #metoo hype.

It seems to me that, given the current international hullabaloo regarding the situation in Syria, it's more likely a 'statement of intent' to head off potential calls for Western (or, indeed, Israeli) aerial intervention. The value of such seemingly token moves in 'The Grand Game' is not to be underestimated.
As already noted, the prospects of getting some 'in theatre' experience with a new type isn't to be sniffed at, either.
All seems perfectly valid to me, and has sod all to do with how many FJ assets the 'rebels' may or may not have.

Ecce Homo! Loquitur...
Dazzle camouflage. Note also, in the shot above, the pattern resembles a smaller aircraft, or the same one at a longer range. Useful in combat in the same way the F-18 canopy painted on the underside was supposed to do.
So confuses speed, range, aspect etc etc......

IIRC one of the reasons that the RAF dropped the multicolour pattern on training aircraft was that it broke up the aircraft shape and made it even more difficult to identify and establish its flight path than a monochrome pattern.
Not the only dazzle pattern they are using.
