twin and single ex USAF WW11 aircraft near Machynnlleth, Wales

driving from Mach towards Newtown and piston twin banked fron Newtown direction into next valley towards Dolgellau closely followed by piston single, both had USAF star type wing markings; any ideas what they were anybody?
