I was on Tankers on Exercise Bobbin in c 1968 when we tanked two F4's from Lossie to Eagle which was operating somewhere just off Penang.
I remember that Admiral Sir Michael le Fanu had decided to occupy (at very short notice) the back seat of one of the Phantoms, much to the chagrin of the Observer, who had to go as passenger, courtesy of the RAF, to the Far East.

That'll be when Eagle was in Lyme bay when the Phantoms were being acquired for the R.N. Eagle never did carry them operationally but was used for cat and trap trials for the crews whilst Ark Royal was undergoing her massive re-fit and "Phantomisation". The only operational F.A.A. Phantom squadron (892) actually became carrier qualified on board the U.S.S. Saratoga as Ark Royal still hadn't completed her re-fit.
