One mag has an impulse coupling which delays the ignition timing at cranking RPM.
Only part of the thing it does, it also flings the mag over rapidly when it releases thus ensuring a fat spark.

what's wrong with the technique in this picture?:

I can most certainly find you an original copy of the Bulldog ACM and FRCs from our archive at Boscombe Down (scanned to PDF). I also have my own copy of the, then, Old Sarum flying club POH in Word or PDF.
I have the Chipmunk, T67 and Bulldog RAF manuals, are they not restricted, or does that at some stage expire?
Re #18,
The prop blade that is swung should be towards the lower point in its path as compression is reached so that, the prop swinger steps away from the prop as they swing through compression, whether the engine fires, or not.

Some of us have replaced the old Bendix mags with Slick. They don't have an impulse mag, so both should be on. Moreover, we also have replaced the old starter motor with a modern Sky-Tec which spins the engine very much faster so spat can occur earlier.
