Not a great advert for the manufacturer.

Bean counters rule Austria too. If the cost of aircraft keeps rising at an exponential rate ................................

Sounds like Gripens might have been a better choice?

The issue is cost rather than capability, and with the current Tranche 1 Typhoons already being 'too capable' for Austria's singular air policing role they are hardly likely to replace them with the more capable Trance 2/3.

Austrian Perception of Typhoon.

I have relatives in Austria who have told me that it's a very unpopular choice of fighter because of the cost. Q flies with heaters only so, it would appear to be a hugely unnecessary expense.

Perhaps some ex USAF F16s would have been a better choice?

The latest estimated cost of the RAF Typhoon programme was some £17.6 billion ( demonstration and manufacture) - making it the most expensive weapon system yet produced for the UK Armed Forces. A rough unit cost estimate is £110 million (demonstration and manufacture divided by 160 aircraft). These figures do not include estimates of the through-life support costs. The cost of flying a Typhoon for one hour is believed to be in the region of £3,875.
Royal Air Force - RAF Aircraft - Typhoon FGR4 - Eurofighter - r7a8 - Armed Forces

The hourly flight cost doesn't seem that high to an ignoramus like me.
Obviously this is a small part of the package, but if you want a versatile, capable weapon system you better shell some cash.

I think that the cost is missing at least one Zero! The Tornado F3 was £35k/hr and that was late 90s. So the full cost of a Typhoon is likely to be £60k+/hr.

In fact, official figures from 6 years ago are:

Aircraft Financial Year 2010-11 Cost Per Hour
Tornado GR4 35,000
Typhoon 70,000
Harrier GR7/GR9 37,000
Tornado F3 43,000

Don't forget these are FULL costs and so it includes fuel, maintenance, air traffic control, aircrew, etc... everything involved on average to get the jet airborne for an hour. If you want just fuel costs then it is probably around £4k-£5k per hour.
