I have just read the obituary in today's Daily Telegraph and I have to say it brought a lump to my throat! The situation he faced; out of ammunition and short of fuel, his wing man shot down and floating in his dinghy in a minefield whilst being attacked by enemy fighters, had all the ingredients of the sort of impossible dilemmas which might have been presented, for discussion, to prospective aircrew at the Cranwell selection procedure (circa 1960, by the way)! After the war, as an auxiliary, taking his dog along in his Meteor for aerobatic practice. There is much more so do read it for yourself. What a brave and inspiring character!
