Cold War Warsaw Pact order of battle
There is a chap on the flypast forums compiling details as the information is released, I thought you might find it interesting to see what actually was what.

I'm waiting for The Group of Soviet Forces Germany to be displayed in full. It should run shivers up and down the spines of those serving in 2ATAF and BAOR!
The books on BRIXMIS were very interesting.

Remember the film of 'the threat' that we were shown on a regular basis- "the Bear's Teeth" as I recall?
"How many tanks are in this field?? Send your answers on a postcard to Ministry of Defence......." was the commentary on the final scene of a field full as the eye could see of Warsaw Pact tanks etc.

Some parts of the Large Hadron Collider use recycled artillery shells, and a lot of titanium from Soviet nuclear subs. The physicist showing me round was quite proud of that.
..and in among the T-62s are some 54/55s and a BM-21.... later on there's a BRDM-2 on the rail tracks, and T-80s on the pic that follows.
Some BTR-60s, and I think the helos are mostly Halos, but I'm ready to be wrong on that one. Maybe a couple of Hips in there.
Are the later German APCs Marders?
there had better be prizes, this recce stuff is buried deep in the grey matter!

And how do you think the Cold War was won?
Mostly by some very brave souls in some very covert ways.
But to continue in the context of the question, of course, by those who had more "cold" hard cash to pour down hole after black hole.

My view, from the change in strategy in the '80s of the Sovs to start with initial nukes again, and effectively to only attack if they thought they were at direct risk of attack themselves, was that the Cold War was won when the Sovs realised they had lost the Quantity vs Quality argument, and I think the Gulf War showed the correctness of this.
Thus the Cold War was won by Courtney and a host of others, from German General to Dutch Squaddie, just being bloody good at their jobs. We should include the clever types who designed and built the kit also.
The Cold War ended when Reagan bankrupted the Sovs.
The Cold War didn't become Hot in part due to the nefarious, sneaky types.
Team effort!
