Launch of Veterans' travel funding for VE Day 70 National Events

Launch of Veterans' travel funding for VE Day 70 National Events

Over the weekend of 8-10 May 2015, the nation will mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of commemorative events.

A new scheme launched by The Royal British Legion will make it even easier for veterans, such as Royal Navy veteran Peter Kent 90 to take part.

All those veterans 85 years and over (by 8 May 2015) who served in the military, the Home Guard or in any one of the reserved occupations, including medics, police and the 'Bevin Boys' during the Second World War are eligible to attend the national events in London, and can receive funding towards travel for them and one nominated carer.

Funding towards travel costs will be available for successfully accredited veterans and their carer to come to London. Details on how to claim will be provided with their accreditation information and reimbursement will be based on travel distance.

Perhaps someone can cross post this on Jet Blast?

May seem churlish to quibble, but good scheme as this is, shouldn't it have been announced weeks, or even months ago?

Quite. Especially if the applications must be sent by Royal Mail, as is our problem for Dad!
