RAF recruitment from the RAAF

I am a current serving member of the RAAF - ATC (Commissioned), considering a move back to the mother country, to either ATC or OPSO in the RAF.

Does anyone have any experience in such a move?

You probably have many a good reason but my only question would be why? Most of us are looking at or in my own case about to embark upon the opposite journey.

Getting out of Blairs presidential autocracy is becoming a must! However, from my understanding you would have to go through the selection process again, however, given that the ATC people are constantly bleeting about how short of people they are you may luck in as i know at least 4 Kiwi dudes who did for GD(P).

I can only wish you the best of luck but i can't wait to move to my newly purchased apartment in Brisbane.

Hi DuckDogers,
Brisbane is great, mate!
Middle of winter soon, and it's 23degC daytime and about 12degC at night, with sunshine most of the day, and little wind!

And this is normal weather, I love it!
An excellent open air city, if you get my drift.
Cheers

Don't do it!!!!!

Read the above, and no doubt read below, and then judge for yourself. Its' cold and wet and depressing as Herr Blair and his fuc@@wits administer the place so you are better off out of it.

I would bet my mortgage you will not find one sane or reasonable person on this means who will tell you what you are proposing is right or sensible but then again we don't know your personnal situation.

That said hope I you come to your sense soon as you will never be able to claim on your holiday insurance when, and it will !!!, it all goes horribly wrong.

Re: RAF recruitment from the RAAF

Hello I'm actually wanting to go the other way does anybody know how hard it is to get into the RAAF, I've just finished uni and completed my BFT with the uas. I've read the website but it doesn't really tell you what the maths and officer quality test they do. Is it anything like OASC?

Thumbs up

.....of course every-one has their own circumstances, but moving to the RAF may not be all that bad.

For various reasons, I moved from RAAF to RAF.

Yes, I would have preferred to remain in Brisbane, but unfortunately the RAAF would rather recruit from overseas than provide flying to experienced aircrew.

.....and you have to leave the RAAF to get the pension and lump sum.

yes the weather sucks, but if you can negotiate same rank and seniority, you may be OK. Make the D wisely. In my opinion there are a few plusses, in addition to some negatives.

[oops, some pprune aholics may now know who I am...]

raaf

a few years ago the raaf tried recruiting raf pilots, they got four! main reason for lack of numbers was raaf pay is about four k less than raf.

Cool

"The grass is always greener"....

The truth is a move to the RAF from the RAAF and vise versa is a purely personal decision and should typically ignore fundementals like salary and improved management....because they are relative and relatively bad....however, comma, there are other reasons for the change over and they are particularly unique to aircraft type, promotion prospects and future A/C type aspirations.

More importantly for the RNZAF (KIWI) Boggies who suddenly had their whole lives ripped from underneath them at such an early stage, the RAF is a good option minus the weather and 11PM pub closing times!

I guess its all much of a muchness, except for the really "manky" (translated to "doggy poo poo") weather that the UK so typically enjoys.....though RNZAF Ohakea rates a close second!

Cool

Hmm,
Its a tricky one. I have experience of both. If you want a high quality of life, outstanding weather, reasonably above the average salary, and generally a less frenzied way of life, then RAAF may be for you. They have some very nice locations, and some truly crap ones (like the RAF).
If on the other hand, you want the best flying in the world bar none, (although I am not saying that the RAF has the best aircraft) and want any chance of some real operational experience, then the RAF is for you. Standard of living is probably a tiny bit lower for your average RAF person & family compared to their aussie counterpart, but there isn't much in it. The weather in the UK just makes the flying more interesting!
In my experience the management of personnel and other issues that can cause much discontent is pretty much the same. You are just as likely to get that short notice posting that you didn't want in either air force. The RAAF also has 'movers', you know where I am going with that one! Finally, aussies are not the beer swilling, barbecue bashing crocodile wrestling chaps that most poms think they are. They are very professional and very serious at work, and very unlaid-back (is that a word?). They love their triv far more than the RAF if that is possible.
Like I say, pro's and cons. For anyone going either way I don't need to tell you to get all the information that you possibly can before making a very big decision.
Hope I haven't insulted anyone too much as I have had a great time in both countries and with both airforces.
