Ministry of Defence 2013-14 accounts - National Audit Office (NAO)
“The Ministry of Defence has made significant improvements in its management of and accounting for assets held on its inventory systems. Consequently, this is the first time since the end of March 2008 that the Department has had an unqualified audit opinion on its inventory and capital spares holdings. However, the Department recognizes that it still faces significant challenges. In particular it remains constrained by aging legacy warehouse and inventory systems which necessitate a high level of manual intervention to ensure data integrity.

I didn't know that there was lots of harumphing about inventory 'issues' when Stafford closed down.

The inference I draw here is that it is once again MoD policy to know what assets they have, and where. Good news.
What always puzzled me is the way MoD lay back and took criticism from auditors when, for example, the answer to this one for years was "It has not been policy since January 1988 to know what we have". That would throw the criticism back at the NAO and force them to spell out the policy that constrained MoD and wasted so much money.
And then reveal what actions were taken to hide this waste and generate the funding to replace the "lost" (actually scrapped) stock.
As a former MoD employee Amyas Morse would know all this. If he doesn't, he wasn't paying attention.

The Stafford closure was an absolute debacle that in terms of inventory problems is still exhuming skeletons 7 years on. I suspect that some of the stores being returned from Dulmen will be legacy stocks from the Stafford closure.
