Notwithstanding the fact that drinking Budweiser is analagous to making love in a canoe, it's good to see that some people do things properly...
When I flew back from Gulf War 1, BZN Stn Ops wouldn't even provide transport for me to collect my car from the sqn car park on the other side of the aerodrome. However, having overheard the conversation, an RAFP Cpl kindly said "No problem, sir - I'll give you a lift even if this lot won't!". Thanks, mate...

Watch the second video, it explains it all.
So yes, staged as Bud wanted to do a home coming.
But even so, I still think it hits the spot for for marketing in the US
and go a lot further than just any advert.

There were some good guys at Brize Beagle, before I eventually ended up there we took a Puma to display at an open day and a Chef that had previously been at Odiham recognised me, he realised I hadn't eaten all day, so took me along to the Officers Mess and cooked me a nice steak meal.

The trouble is they all jump on it, and don't get me wrong, I applaud those that have served, but it sits uncomfortably with me when big business uses it to push their product, which is what they are doing.
Mawkish, sure.
Contrived and a marketing exercise, yes.
But all the same, moving, and the thing that got me was the Vietnam vets.
It does make you realise how absolutely gutting it must have been for those who went, genuinely believing in what they were doing, faced danger and horror, only to arrive home and receive no acknowledgement, or even worse, outright hostility.

tartare.......That is exactly why my generation of Veterans is so determined it shall never ever happen again to our Young Folks.
A short story....while riding my motorcycle up to Washington DC for the annual Rolling Thunder Ride which takes place every Memorial Day....I stopped at a very small Cafe to buy breakfast and put on some more clothes...it being a bit chilly.
I saw another pair of Harley's parked there...and joined the Husband/Wife couple who were riding them.
The Husband and I were Vietnam Vets....he an Infantryman....me a Chinook Pilot.
While we were eating....a fellow walked over...patted me on the back and thanked me for my Service....I was wearing my motorcycle club teeshirt...."Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA)....which he had noticed.
I thanked him for his kind words and reminded him it was the current generation that needed thanking....and off he went.
When we tried to pay our Bill for our meal....it had already been paid for us.
That stranger does not understand how much that simple gesture meant to us. It was worth far more than the Twenty Dollars it cost him.....it was worth a Million Bucks to us.
That set the stage for my Rolling Thunder Ride on Memorial Day.....what a grand one it was. Maybe 800,000 motorcycles....the Pentagon Parking Lots completely full....and a ride route across the Memorial Bridge...down the side of the Mall to the Capitol Building.....cross over and back down the Mall. Flags flying, music playing, people yelling, cheering, waving, Bikers revving their engines for the little kids....it is a good Day.
Even the little town of Shenandoah, Virginia does us well.....on an Annual Charity Ride my group puts on that ends in that small town. We had a Police Escort from the starting point near Washington.....then upon entering the Town Limits, their Fire Department led us into Town with one of their Fire Wagons....as we turned down Main Street it seemed the entire Town turned out. Upon making a final turn and heading down the hill to the VFW Post (Think British Legion)....two other Fire Wagons with their Ladders raised, were flying a huge American Flag.
Vietnam Veterans got no welcome home back then.....but we get it today.

SAS, my colleagues and I had quite a few free breakfasts after the night shift in the US. No-one actually told us who paid, but when the bill was due, it has been taken care of.....Only in the US....

Silly Assed Beer Commercial....Not!
Saw the Puppy Love (golden retriever) commercial couple days ago.....reminded me of my little man waiting at home for me. Wife says he knows its me calling and just howls at phone till she puts me on speaker phone, he grabs phone and hugs it... Too cute, soon as he sees my work bag come out to go on tour, he grabs my leg and won't let go. Posted said vid on my crapbook page while touring yesterday.... Response from my buds in UK blew me away.....some of my ex bud mortar men from Commandos and Paras reduced to tears. Beautiful ad and just goes to show mans best friend.....can't wait to get home off tour and spend quality time with my Little Man.

I've just watched it and it reflects clever corporate advertising tapping into the sentimentality of the masses. Very good advertising indeed. Effective in what it did.
Is a welcome for heroes the thing that military personnel need? No. They need a through-life care system that helps them try to put back together the pieces before they drop them all and things really go to crap. They need a military that doesn't think that repeated year-long deployments are a good idea. Amongst other things.
