But nothing new. Of course a "proper" aircraft landed on a cargo ship many many years ago .

Bit of a non-event really. The ship is probably doing eighteen knots or so. Add fifteen knots of wind, and the relative wind is thirty-three knots on the nose.

So, that was a good landing? Albeit after a peculiar approach?

OK, they walked away ... Your preferred 'arrival', Herod?

Flying from any airfield that might not be there when you get back is crazy!

Reminds me of the new US NAVY concept "carriers" as an extention package for the newest ship, the USNS Montford Point.

Obstacles forward seem to be an unfortunate addition.

Best not, eh?

Would have been airborne a bit quicker if the deck-handlers had let it go similtaneously and earlier. It looks as if they were trying to stop him taking off!

And does it take two hands on sticks to fly an autogyro (sp?)?

What happened next?

So, does anyone know what happened to "Soapy" thereafter? Admiral of the Fleet by now I shouldn't wonder!

CB

From this thread:

"Trenchard Brat 24th Jan 2011, 20:53

lets put this to bed once and for all, Mike Watson was Sharkeys no2, Ian Watson was the Alraigo Kid, Mike flew with FRADU after retiring from the RN, he went on to fly the Hunter/Hawk and now the Falcon, last time i saw Ian Watson he was in a shopping Mall in Dubai, he was an instructor pilot for the Royal Saudi Air Force!"

Umm, not sure why anyone would want to do that, certainly not much width to play with on the landing.

I also fear this might have played into their Airships hand and can see the RAF being reequipped with microlights and the Navy carriers being converted into tankers in the next review of 2015.
