Airmen's Club RAF Coningsby

Does anyone remember what the Airmen's Club was called at RAF Coningsby during the early 70's?

So, a whole thread all to yourself, eh? Until I came along, obviously.

Tried looking for the delete thread bit but being technologically challenged I failed miserably.

If you delete your first post, the whole lot will disappear. I think.

And, yes, it was the Castle Club, Dave.

And now its called the Heroes Bar (according to the Coningsby Hive website). Not sure has the same ring but I do remember evacuating the whole place when I was SDO in the 80s due to a bag full of a fireman's sports kit which was masquerading as a bomb.

You needed the RAF Odious Plod, we were all evacuated from the mess due to a suspect bag at the height of the troubles, obviously watching his lunch getting cold with the rest of us he ventured forth, unzipped it, and without looking inside, turned it upside down and tipped it all out, false alarm he shouts and then walked back into the mess... often wondered what he would have thought to see a couple of slabs or semtex and a timer dropping out of the bag..

Glad to see they haven't named the club after some bloody aircraft as per Bruggen when the first Tornados arrived and everything NAAFI took on the name.

See Gib has finally got rid of the Jaguar club name for the OM.

I've heard that the 'Heros Bar/Castle club' is only selling larger at the moment, they are awaiting a tranche 3 block six upgrade to the pumps to allow hand pumped ale. They did have an austere John Smith capability at one point..

The NAAFI at Bruggen was called the Crossbow Club when I was there (93-96) or did I miss something?

The NAAFI bop became the Tornado Rooms, I cannot remember the name previous to that, but we on the not so mighty Jaguar thought at least give us a chance to leave before you rename everything.

One, along with ones entire course, were "less than politely" asked to leave said Castle club, well the bowling alley adjacent to said club when, after 5 weeks of catatonic boredom and incarceration , with possibly the worst instructor ever, on the F-4 airframe course, we decided that some R n R was needed.

Given the thread on alcohol consumption, I can only say that, in those days, the safe number of units was not as well defined as it is today......attempting to get the ball across all the lanes, rather than the intended one lane, and explaining we were testing Barnes-Wallis's theory was not "well received" at the time.

Talking of Clubs, airmen for the use off. Are there any Malcolm Clubs still around?
The one I first encountered at RAF Wahn was excellent. The mess food was crap so the Club's egg and chips sustained us, on a daily basis. Furthermore, the rockapes were barred from using it, so it never got wrecked!
The other one I knew was at RAF Tengah which was a lovely retreat, in which to relax with one's mates.

Bruggens was superb, RAF days, treated you like a human being with lounges that were a relaxing atmosphere and an ideal place to settle down with the Sunday papers and a cup of coffee. They showed that treat people with respect and give people quality sofas and armchairs etc it wouldn't be abused.

I will never forget the NAAFI club at Luqa circa 1974. On a detachment with 56 Sqdn (an Airdex as I remember), the finest food I ever ate was their Egg Banjo. A few Hop Leafs and a couple of Banjo's was by far worth the trip along the med in the Whistling Tit. Anyone know if that club had a name ? I just thought it was the NAAFI.

There was a great Malcolm Club in Bahrein in the 60's. Almost nowhere else to go off base in those days - weren't allowed in the clubs at the AMOCO site at Awali as the Paras from Hamala had got pissed and wrecked the place. AMOCO tarred us all with the same brush and banned all servicemen!
