Pensions and the MOD
Interesting article in the torygraph about the MOD fouling up on our pensions and trying to rip us off, it looks as though even el Presdente is miffed with them so it must be bad. Have we had, or can we have, any input as to how our pensions are handled? Can someone who is cleverer than me put the torygraph link in and tell me how to do it? I know there are some financial boffins out there, can it be explained in easy terms viz a viz the existing system versus the proposal?

2 good quotes in there about the pension review.

“The MoD has produced weak and uninformative consultation documents, containing proposals which are, at best, inadequately thought through and, at worst, fundamentally flawed”
Strong condemnation from a Labour dominated and chaired committee! So, will anyone be held responsible for preparing this review, which has fairly obviously been a waste of time, effort and money, or are all the promotion chasers who would have claimed the glory had it gone well going to turn into faceless wonders? Oh, and the review implemented in full of course.

More wasted effort in an organisation which can't provide boots or flying suits - but plenty of stupid yellow road-diggers coats. And which persists in allowing the damn jockstrapping mafia more and more power with their obsessive fitness testing bo££ocks - but tries to cut more and more from our professional activities. Which can't provide a medical service....or now, it seems, a decent pension review.
Time to remove the pins restraining the black-and-yellow could well be getting nearer.............

This comes as no suprise when you look at how the commercial pensions sector has taken a big hit. Many employes are now having to re negotiate their pension entitlement, especially if theirs was a final salary deal.
The MOD, according to the article suffered an 'administrative blunder' how often have you heard that? What that blunder was will no doubt be kept quiet but I hope it is repairable. On a positive note, I would be confident that there are plenty of MPs who support the armed forces and will keep the pressure on for a fair deal. TB should be worried that if the pension system is seen to be degraded from what it is now, more servicemen, especially pilots, will leave for a commercial career.

On the subject of pensions - I joined up originally as an airman with my reckonable years starting at age 18. When I was later commissioned that starting age jumped to 21. How does that work? Have I lost those 3 years of pension earning or will it be added to my officer pension when I retire (probably at 38!)?

Farke, yes!, no!. Nor would you get more should you serve beyond 55.
If ever Flying Pay (that non pay pay) is included you can be sure it won't be back dated either.

I'm rapidly approaching the age when I'll have to decide whether to jump ship or go down the "proffessional aviator" route.
Any one got any clues to the proposed prof aviator pay/pension scheme? I haven't seen anything in print yet or have I been wearing my blinkers again!

Death Cover
Should I die in service I estimate my wife's payout to be somewhere in the region of £150 000 and for her to then get 6 months pay (I pay AVCs). I was then somewhat surprised to work out that she would susequently only receive about £4000 per year plus £2000 per child until age 17. I would have expected the cover offered to be larger than that. I have additional life cover for this. How does this compare with life on the outside?
Feeling rather foolish as I write this (must close the curtain next time, Ed)....but cannae find it written down anywhere and have received contradictory replies so far:

Lots of colourful brochures telling us how wonderful the 'new' pension scheme will be blah - utter bo££ocks, all of it
I am afraid it's like everything else in this damned Air farce today, lets waste millions of £££ in order to try and save a few £ and screw anyone that gets in the way.
We are now part of a service that has no flying kit at all, but plenty of the sh*t we don't need, God help us.
Come on Mr B liar, if you want us to do your job, please stop screwing us to the wall with poor and/or unavailable kit, and stop messing with our pensions.
The pins are out on that yellow and black handled seat, and the hands are rapidly moving in that direction.
I feel a Martin baker let-down coming on!!

Don't know definitive answer I'm afraid but suspect that your gratuity will increase slightly. Suggest you start by looking in AP3392 Leaflet 2002 (Blunties should have a copy) and go from there. This is apparantly the source document for all pay/pension matters.

Unless I am mistaken your gratuity (without commutation) is three times your pension. Have a look at:

Yep, looks like it will be the wild green yonder for the EESDL family - can't take anymore of the Forces bo77acks, micro-management, complete lack of direction/training policy, penny-pinching, Nobel Peace Prize antics - after all; life's not a rehearsal!!
If I'm still eligble for a gratuity after a 5 year return of service after my 18 yr pt, then maybe I'll be able to house my family where the sun shines out of the sky, not some ****-licking sycophant's ****:-)
