Didn't we say that we were going to do the same thing? How did that work out?

Indeed... all of the brass doorknobs, push-plates, and railings in all DOD buildings are to be removed and sold for their scrap value, and replaced by ones made of carbon-composite (gold-plated), stainless steel, and mahogany (as appropriate).

Seriously - if we fired 50% of SO's would there be any detrimental effect?

All bull**it meters would have to be reset at a lower threshold. Otherwise, no.

It has always interested me that when wars break out about 6-12 months in it becomes a necessity to run off almost all the SO's, Admirals, Generals etc who were in place when it started

Obviously the talents required in a peace time are not exactly suitable when the balloon goes up.............................

I always thought they were there simply to say "yes we can do that" to HM Gov, then in retirement they change to " we have been cut and are far to stretched to do that"

and all that brass adds a touch of distinction to Royal events

besides - where else would we get Lords Lieutenant of the County from?

I thought we had already chopped a large (relatively) number of SOs in the redundancy tranches?

Ministry of Defence cull sees RAF lose third of officers - Telegraph

I know 1 in 6 doesn't quite = 20% but it's not a million miles adrift. Does anyone know how many actually went, and how many jumped ship regardless of redundancy?

I realize that nothing outside the UK matters, or even exists to some... but this thread is about AMERICAN cuts in top ranks.

So the Royals invite US "brass" to their events to add distinction?

I guess they think that UK "brass" isn't up to the task.

However, I think your LLs aren't US citizens.

Ah, you see that was me making assumptions again. I assumed the thread originator was British and I assumed that the comment "Now there's an idea" meant that we, the British, should follow the American example and chop 20% of our senior officers too.

Rather silly of me really.
