One for budding future pilots (or engineers)

Here's one for all you dads out there with sons (or daughters) who might want to be future pilots (or engineers). Go on, you know you want to.

Perhaps a bit more than the old pocket money range, but then maybe I am out of date on current pocket money rates.

RP ... and for a bit more pocket money ... you can have one of these little monsters

IMHO every school science lab should have one ... we need to encourage engineering

We built one of these to assist in air cadet lectures. The finish is poor for an Airfix kit, it needs a lot of fiddling to function. Not worth the money.

Could not agree more Coffman. Now I wonder if I could crowd source this little beauty on the net!

TomJoad,

It might well "brighten up the tea break" in the staff room as well I've seen these mini jets in action, awesome. But, it needs someone with some whits about him/her to handle them. Which brings to mind a question. Having flown both electric powered and conventional prop powered model aircraft. Does anyone think that flying a jet powered scale model warrants some sort of selection process. Merely to weed out the people who may only be capable of operating slower less "twitchy" aircraft. I've certainly managed to take several hundred quids worth of balsa wreckage home in a black bin bag. I once lost an electric powered glider in a big Cu Nimb. Whilst having a play in Cumbria. I would hate to think what I could do with jet power.

Possibly the RAF could run a selection centre that could whittle out the Fast jet, multi engine and even the helicopter operators. Perhaps it's all been done before, I'm sure someone will know.

That is beyond cool or as the kids would say "minted". If I remember correctly Srcapyard Challange made a pulse jet once to power a rail mounted cart. It was "well minted" if not just a wee bit scary.

Thanks for the link NutLoose

Nutty, Tom ... In the 70's I helped my Metalwork Master build a small V1 type PJ. IIRC the most difficult part of the build was to fabricate an accurate grill/slat arrangement. Fired it up once where upon it reduced it's self to a pool of molten metal as we didn't have access to high tech metals or tooling ... but it was fun ! I bet "elf and safety" would have a fit these days

Disrupting the Geography Department ... kids stuff ... impress the entire school

a guy once showed up on the airfield with an apu bolted to the tray of his ute.
he asked if it would be ok to run it.
the guys positioned him on a taxiway and gathered around to watch.
he duly fired it up and ran it. up close they are quite loud but give off a wonderful burnt kero smell.
having proved the setup he shut it down.

women then appeared from nearby hangars and let rip with an awful haranguing about inconsiderate oafs and their noise. they really got wound up about all this. when they finally ran out of steam the guys watching them all turned back to the apu and said almost in unison "run it again."

in another incident the police arrived. walked over and made enquiries as to what the noise was. "can you run it again?"

you wont upset guys by running a turbine.

probably not. the engine in the photo is about 4 inches diameter.

the twin turbine cri cri used those engines.

Mate of mine many years ago at school made a pulse jet - I think it had a flexible (very thin metal) flap whch acted as the valve.

Difficult to say, cos - as predicted above - it rapidly melted itself!

He was aiming to be an Eng Officer, but he got chopped at Henlow! Probably just as well, all things considered .........

The friend of a school aeromodelling chum once acquired a 'dynajet' pulse jet, but could never get it to start. He and a friend then took it indoors to a bedroom in a block of flats and bolted it firmly down with the back end pointing out of the window over a closed-in courtyard. They huffed and puffed with fuel and spark plug, whilst pumping away with a bike pump to provide starting air. All of a sudden they hit the vinegar stroke and the thing started up....

Pulse jets are not known for their green and fluffy manner. They are VERY noisy!

Mayhem ensued. A million pigeons took wing, windows flew open, pensioners ran for shelter thinking "That 'itler's doodlebugs are back".... A flaming exhaust and the deafening racket of a pulse jet in such a confined space being somewhat hard to conceal, it was inevitable that Plod was duly called....

Each of the lads were fined £5 for a breach of the peace by the local magistrate, who reportedly could barely keep a straight face when the details of the case were solemnly read out by the copper in typical plod-speak....
