RAF Careers TV Programme Sponsorship ?
Being of a certain age and still interested in powerful machinery ... I thought I'd watch Chris Tarrant's new series on C5 last night entitled Extreme Railways.
To my complete surprise the programme appeared to be sponsored by RAF Careers ... there was quite a good short promo piece before Tarrant hit the screen.
I may be way out of touch ... but I wouldn't have thought that the viewing demographics for a programme of this nature matched that of potential recruits ... on age grounds alone ?
Can someone enlighten us on the strategy at play here ... if there is one
A perplexed Coff.

I didn't see the lead in but the adverts during the commercial breaks were dire IMO. Not one person smiling or looking close to happy. Groundcrew man walking round a flight-line carrying a small cardboard box marked AOG! Female musician standing holding a trombone - what does it show or prove?

It may have been cheap as chips, the budget may have had something left in it, someone 'media' within the MoD may have just done the course and needed a campaign under their belt? Or, heading into Xmas, when families are more inclined to be together, it may have been aimed at the opinion formers (dad/grandad - steering things when chatting to the yoof). On the other hand, it may have been someone who didn't know what they were doing!
Army advertising does seem more joined up; they seem to do it better (maybe they can afford to be everywhere, and their message is far less subtle), or maybe the RAF can afford to focus more tightly on a more defined demographic. The recent radio ads weren't the best, although the fact that the officer called the young JNCO by his first name possibly underlines the difference at how the message needs to be received.

Gentlemen,
May I throw in my two penney worth.
First, I haven't seen any of the programmes mentioned, but I am a Television Director.
There is a big difference between 'sponsorship' of a programme and 'advertising' during a programme. If there are captions claiming 'sponsorship', then you're right, the sponsor will partly fund the programme. If however adverts are merely inserted at breaks, then this is not 'sponsorship' per se. The revenue generated by adverts simply goes to the broadcast company coffers, not to the programme or its makers.
As to why a particular advert is inserted into a programme, this is usually because the advertiser's target audience are assumed to watch that particular programme.
Hope this helps.

A point to note about modern recruiting adverts is that they are carefully targetted in their content. If you don't 'get it' then you are not the person they are after. Most people posting on here are either already in or have already left and so are not the target.

Thanks Lukeafb1 ... These are most certainly "sponsored" C5 TV Programmes.
OrgASMic ... I take your point but that's the kind of Emperors New Clothes "Heifers Dust" I'd expect to come from the AD Agency (and I have experience in dealing with AD Agencies) !
On the present basis ... I'm looking forward to "Gardens World" being sponsored by the RAF Regiment
Or how about "Loose Women" being sponsored by RAF Aircrew ... Ooh sorry we aren't recruiting Aircrew at the moment
Perhaps we should give M a helping hand with a few other possible sponsorship suggestions
Over to you chaps ...
Coff.

If the advert is being watched by the wrong target audience then surely it's in the wrong place or a total waste of time and money.
