Going back to the original post ... the 'civil airliner' mentioned ... wasn't it a Dan Air Comet? I've got a vague recollection of seeing it on TV many, many years ago.

Maybe this one?

Think I've got a pic somewhere of my Dad's Canberra on a foam carpet at Manston. Circa 1963 ish

REQUEST PHONE PATCH OVER!!

I heard once that an aircraft requested a Phone Patch to RAF Manston over a poor HF circuit. After many minutes waiting the HF operator was asked why it was taking so long to set up. After a while the operator came back on line to announce the Foam Path would be ready in 45 mins!
