I missed the births of my 2 sons. Number 1 at Nocton, Number 2 at Catterick. Both were early.
When I mentioned my absences to a Sister at Catterick, she replied "Oh well, as long as you were there for the conception".
That comment got my mental arithmetic working overtime.
Thankfully, I worked it out that I was.

To me THE MOST IMPORTANT issues are the next of kin be close to the patient and the nursing staff that look after our sick and injured be service personnel as they MUST have that black service sense of humour.

My Father wasn't present at my birth, as it wasn't 'the done thing' back then.
He was on duty as a county ambulanceman, delivering a baby at the roadside, on route to the same maternity hospital he'd dropped my Mother at earlier...
