Decoy Airfield?

Anyone seen anything similar to this before? Lots of bomb craters and some Soviet aircraft outlines carved into the ground - sort of a modern-day Cerne Abbas.

Any of you Cold War Vets shed any light on it?

In Poland on Google Maps, enter 51.993205, 22.175131‎ into the search box (+51° 59' 35.54", +22° 10' 30.47")

Yours Aye

Very interesting. My guess is that i's a training area. Could it even be a range?

A little research shows the sand aircraft to be Cele naziemne, which is 'ground targets' in Polish. So I go with a range.

Further research reveals that it's the Jata Reserve, used as a military training area, including air-to-cround.

A modern day "Cerne Abbas" would have a big black rectangle imposed over his "tackle"....by the way....can we have some more F15s circleing overhead taking pictures please??

It's good to know that for all those years of the cold war we were actually safe. Just look at the number of craters in the surrounding trees and, it appears, not one hit on the targets!

I'm wondering if the ground shapes would look like aircraft with Synthetic Aperture RADAR or IR sensors?

B1B, F-111, F16 shapes? Or is it just me? The photos show some old tanks, AA guns and craters, though the photographer was quite brave IMO walking into a range like that. UXB?

Must admit, the aircraft look more like shapes scraped out of the dirt as opposed to the tanks/guns which are real (ex).

Using google maps and the street view facility, you can see photos of the area, including the 'cerne abbas' sand aircraft and rusting AAA & tank hulks. There also appears to be a war cemetery to the East. South of the 'landing strip' there is also a 'monument to the memory of soldiers of the national army'.

The town of Lukow, to the SE of the woods has history
https://sites.google.com/site/dbelanovsky/d

The Holocaust in Lukow

During World War II, the Jewish community in Lukow was decimated. Before the Jews of Lukow disappeared, the town was a transit point on the way to the gas chambers for thousands of Jews from various regions of Poland and even from abroad. In May 1942, over 2,000 Jews from Slovakia were sent to Łuków.

The first mass murders of the Jews of Lukow started in March 1942, when the Germans shot forty-seven of them. Next, forty-nine were killed on the 31st of April. During that summer, Jews were prohibited to leave the town. Everyone who broke this ban was killed.

The systematic liquidation of the Jewish community in Lukow started on 5th October 1942. At that time, 5,000 people were sent to the death camp in Treblinka and also five-hundred were killed on the spot. At that time, the last rabbi (since 1937) of the Jewish community in Lukow, Aaron Note Freiberg, was killed. Next, two-thousand people were transported to Treblinka on the 8th of October. After that action, the size of the ghetto in Łuków was reduced. The Jews from the neighborhood villages of Kock, Wojcieszkow, Adamów, Stanin, Tuchowicz, Trzebieszow and Ulan were next sent to the town. On 26-27 October and 7-11 November, three-thousand people were transported to Treblinka and two-hundred Jews were shot in front of the town hall and at the Jewish cemetery.

The Jews who were still alive were returned to the ghetto in December 1942, their living area confined to just a few houses. The ghetto was finally liquidated on 2nd May 1943. In this way then, the Jewish community in Lukow had completely disappeared.

Haven't used that particular range but have had a crack at one similar to the west at Nadarzyce. Compared to the HQSTC AWRs it was awesome. So much to aim at (real tanks, SAMs, aircraft) and very few restrictions.

I clearly remember the range orders allowed for chemical weapons if the wind was strong enough to disperse it and the Polish SU-22s we were working with had the place burning nicely with live ordnance before we turned up with the 3KG terror weapon.

Compare that to a few bombing circles and strafe targets that we were used to at Pembrey, Holbeach or Donna!

(Yes, I know Pembrey eventually got a convoy and Tain has a green tank and a red tank...but really!)

Egyptian range.

Analysis from the conspiracy people purely from Google Earth imagery. They believe that the area was bombed to destroy the 'evidence'. They also believe that the aircraft targets are ancient aircraft! You really couldn't make it up!

Orca, our bombing circles had full size sand replicas of aircraft too. You must have come after the tide went out

Seriously, I went out to the old Wainfleet #1 up near Gib Point. There was some plastic covered chain link lying in the sand and the bullseye was a smooth semi-specifical green painted object as I would imagine a T54/55 turret. The metal however was millimetres thick and thinner than any vehicle except a truck cab but not that shape.
We didn't have a shovel to explore further.
