...except that the train company themselves stated that one of Osborne's party approached the ticket inspector before tickets were checked and asked to pay the upgrade fee. I accept that the train company in question has good reason to be nice to the government at the moment, but still, it's pretty unequivocally a non-story.

Besides, the fact that one of the most senior ministers in the government is only entitled to standard-class tickets is inverted snobbery gone mad.

I agree ES, it is a press generated swipe. As he is entitled to second class he will have been issued with it but, preferring to use first class is quite prepared to fund the - as it turns out - quite considerable cost of upgrade out of his own pocket. In other words, a non story.
