In cockpit pictures
Have to go back a few years for these photos I took at 5 FTS (RAF Thornhill, S. Rhodesia) in 1952 -53.
Sadly I wasn't into colour photography in those days.
A couple of days later these two Harvards collided in mid-air at Salisbury, killing the three occupants.

Were these part of the 21 Harvards and 17 Chipmunks shipped out to the RATG ?
5 FTS had 27 Chipmunks for primary training, about 60 Harvards for advanced training and 12 Ansons for navigational training. The Ansons were returned to the UK when 3 ANS at Thornhill closed at the end of September 1951.
The 27 Chipmunk T.10s allocated to 5 FTS were built at Hawarden near Chester, crated and shipped out to Durban in South Africa. At Durban the crates were transferred to rail trucks for the journey to 394 MU at RAF Heany near Bulawayo where they were assembled, flight tested and then flown up to Thornhill.
The Harvards were shipped to Ysterplaat near Cape Town, assembled by the RAF Erection Unit based there and flown up to Rhodesia by instructors from the RATG.
RAF Heany (4 FTS) - 100-miles south near Bulawayo had a similar number of aircraft, but no Ansons.

It's a great shame that WG335 and WG351 didn't survive ... can't make out the serial of "32" in the first pic or the other chipmunk in the formation ... any idea ?

I can't resolve the serial number of Chipmunk G32 in the photo, it's just too small.

WG351 : Reported : Crashed (out of fuel !) New South Wales 2.9.1965 was under a civilian serial of VH-SJD.
PS. I've just noticed that both your pics are in "Chipmunk The Poor Man's Spitfire" (page 277) ... so I guess you know Rod Brown

I recall a Chipmunk enthuisast based/living at Booker ISTR wanting to use some of my photos a few years ago, but can't remember his name, so assume Rod may be the one. Normally if people want to use my photos commercially I give permission, only requesting that the photo be attributed to me.

It's certainly JP-ish (my dislike of the aircraft has led to me trying to purge images of it from my memory). The top of the handle visible to the right of the central throttle quadrant is related to pressurisation, so it has to be a 5 or possibly a Strikemaster (I've never seen the inside of one of those). It's got a few extras than the basic military model, so I'm going for civvy JP5 (with mods to shut the CAA up) or a Strikemaster.
