Gospel Pass - Abergavenny-Hay on Wye

Was walking the Gospel Pass yesterday when a Hawk T2 flew into the valley from the south and then gracefully dove down the steep drop at the northern end of the pass before banking right. Looked like great fun.

Does anyone know if its a flowed valled south to north or is it both ways?

Thanks
Alex

Glad you're enjoying your holiday in the UK

As a matter of interest Tankertrashnav do you use drived or drove as the past tense for to drive?

You compare apples and pears. Dive is usually a regular verb, hence dived; drive is an irregular (and occasionally reflexive) verb hence drove (and drover as well as driver.) Apparently our ex-colonial cousins, whilst evolving their version of our language, do occasionally treat dive as irregular and use dove. They also coined terroristic; as they would say - go figure.

That said it is a wonderful spot to walk and view low flying aircraft.

I was actually comparing two verbs that end in 've' therefore I'm not comparing apples with pears.

please note the smiley used in both posts.

Seriously though I actually find 'dived' sounds clumsy, a bit like the use of 'lighted' instead of 'lit' but I suspect it depends when you were educated and by whom, my English teacher insisted on his rules, with things such as heave/hove, reeve/rove, roof/rooves, hoof/hooves etc. if you dared to write 'heaved' you got a clip round the ear even though it was used at the time

I think we had the same English teacher !

Rules were made to stick to - at school, even though the general population
used words like your example, "heaved".

And most people wouldn't know the word "hove" anyway !

Alex,

I do believe that the pass to Capel-y-ffyn is one way, south to north

Only on pprune could a post, sharing the pleasure of seeing a low flying Hawk, become a pedantic lesson on the correctness of the English language, in less the 10 posts.
Wonderful stuff!

An ISS pass is now mandatory before posting on PPRuNe. Those without should be on AARSE!

English like wot she is wrote

'Ere, no disrespecting ISS, please. One of the proudest moments of my Service career was when I got my final results after ISS. Something along the lines of, 'In gaining a "C", Flt Lt Qadoo has clearly made the minimum effort possible in order to pass the course.'

Now that's what I call fine judgement
