Who said I was good? I'll admit to 'lucky'.

I visited RAF Cosford recently, where RAF techies learn their trade. Thay have hangars full of Jags (so that's where they went!). Each had a name under the cockpit canopy. I was told these were the names of the pilots who flew them into Cosford on their last flights knowing those names won't be replaced by others.

Altough a few of the Jags can and do taxy. They are for training 'taxy pilots' and marshallers. Maybe they'll put their names on them?

I've had my name on three different types of jet.

However, back in the late 70s/early 80s I was the squadron QFI/IRE on a certain Bruggen Jaguar squadron.

My name was painted below the rear cockpit, where I spent quite a bit of time.

Not overly impressed with that.

I was on a FJ squadron several (make that very many) years ago, and my logbook shows that over two years, I flew the aircraft with my name on the side just seven times. I suppose it was a morale thingy? Or simply fashion?

In two years I flew 'my' jet 30 times, most of those with the Nav with his name on it too. We had an unofficial policy of having crews fly their own jets if available, especially on detachments.

That's why they sent me F3 - wouldn't quite fit on a GR1

A real A***E of a Flight Commander was posted into one of the Ballykelly Squadrons and had his name painted under the cockpit window of a Shackleton, the first person to do so; some unkind soul appended (WHITE CARD).
