Declassified US flying Saucer project 1794

The saucer was supposed to reach a top speed of “between Mach 3 and Mach 4, a ceiling of over 100,000 ft. and a maximum range with allowances of about 1,000 nautical miles,” according to the document.

If the plans had followed through to completion they would have created a saucer, which could spin through the Earth’s stratosphere at an average top speed of about 2,600 miles per hour. Wow. It was also designed to take off and land vertically (VTOL), using propulsion jets to control and stabilize the aircraft. Admittedly the range of 1,000 nautical miles seems limited in comparison to the other specifications – but if you’d hopped on the disk in New York it could’ve had you in Miami within about 24 minutes.

I always thought it was aliens who had abducted me, not Americans.

The precursor to this concept was the avrocar, an example of which is in the Western Canada Aviation Museum in Winnipeg

The WCAM is well worth a visit if you find yourself in Winnipeg; lots of interesting stuff and great for the kids too.

Fox3 - you beat me to it! It never flew, just wobbled about in hover mode. I have more info including drawing, will scan and post hopefully tomorrow (Sunday).

Just "wobbling about in the hover" is still flying !
I have a couple of flights in my log book doing just that in this particular jet

That must mean my boss at work is one of "them". And I'm getting mentally prepared for more of the same tomorrow morning!

I invented it.

Me and the cat invented that one evening wearing tin foil hats. The bleedin' government went and bought the slow as a slug Harrier. I tell you what - there is loot to be made from intergalactic travel. Ryanair and Sharkey are well behind the loop.............

Just think what RyanAir could charge then for a packet of peanuts, knowing there is no stop for the next 228 million kilometers, bet they wouldn't improve the seat pitch though, and on your trip to Mars they will probably drop you off on Phobos.

Aye!

Daft as a stoker's dog handler you lot. I've discussed it all with the cat, and the cat having read all of Heinlein's books agrees with me. We invented intergalactic travel after a wee sesh' one sunny afternoon.

Funny... I didn't even know there was a USAF in 1794!

Sigh... Yes, I did read the project number on the brochure upper right corner... what happened to break your sense of humor?

Something, apparently. Sorry, don't know how I missed that one after looking back over it.
