BEagle, you know I have VC10 history namely the tyre incident from George's VASS. At Leuchars I was the shift corporal that night, the ground eng. (a CT) was overruled by the MaEng (WO) and the aircraft departed with almost disastrous consequences I also was interviewed by the BOI under oath the capt ( a SQN iirc) lied to the BOI and me straight to my and the boards face. it was lucky for me that I documented everything that night, it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth all these years later. Incidentally as far as I am aware (please correct me) it was the CT THAT TOOK THE RAP, certainly was not me.

This is a long way away from the initial thread which was about the Queen of the Skies being grounded because cracks have been found on the axle stubs! Going back to the A300 we had an aeroplane that was ferried from BFS to BRU with only seven main wheels! (with Airbus approval).

The pics (as stated below one of the photos) were from Dec 09. It was a VC10 trail. The gear down ferry was not the trail aircraft, but did follow a similar route back to the UK from Nellis. The gear got stuck in the up lock and after 5 attempts at lowering, controlled yaw, roll and spoiler (for vibration) freed it. I enjoyed 5 days in Vegas waiting for our replacement aircraft

After the gear down thread detour, is the VC10 fleet still grounded as a result of the cracks?

My last overseas trip in a 10 ended up with a U/C main leg down ferry from Edmonton via Bangor. Made for a very slow flight and we got lots of comments on the airways from other aircraft.

"Say, airplane with the T tail - do you know your gear is down".

Thread Creep

halton-there certainly is creep the first post says f*** all about cracks!

Nut loose / Beags my answer about gear retraction referred to a single EFATO Beags is right about the action in a DEFATO .

As for a gear down ferry there is no appetite for any risk these days so I am not sure we would do it

the original question was about fuel burn with a gear out, sorry about slight drift but if you research boeing 377,b17,b29 you will find something lalong the lines of - after t/o if you can`t get all the gear up, you have a big prob i remember b377 coming out of mexico city must be around 88 or89 had the mexican equestrian on board cant remember where they where going, a/c took off ok then one of the gears refused to come up - whole plot crashed on a motorway, very messy the capt i think was one of the survivors iirc rick more? its a long time ago got pissed since then!
same reason key bird had an aux gen in the back, extra pwr to get the gear up

good luck gs.
