The rack looks like a type of SUU, it's too small for a TER.
The store - perhaps a training ECM pod?

It's the PEWT, Phantom EW Training pod. We trialled it for a while with not a great amount of success. As an aside, do you have the date of the photo Rhino just in case I was flying it, it's a nice picture?

I agree it was a Phantom Electronic Warfare Training pod. Gave basic jamming but not much else and was controlled by the old nuclear controll panel in the front cockpit.

Thanks for the replies folks, much appreciated. Audax, sorry, I have no idea of the date when the photo was taken, it was posted on an ethusiasts forum a couple of years back...

It was one of those crazy requirements. We couldn't buy a proper jamming pod as it might have had a wartime role (which wasn't the requirement). A pod based on the Aberporth kit was fine though, even though it could only be used for training..........................

XV491

The picture is taken at RAF Coningsby - landing on runway 26. The aircraft was lost on a night sortie in July 82 with Al Riley and Marc Hanton from 29 Squadron I'd guess the picture was taken in summer 1981 - the aircraft was pretty clean and the RAF F4s were only painted grey in the 1980s

Who is the pilot?

Looking at the angle of attack, the aircraft is flying at on speed plus 5 knots. I had a really bad habit of doing this in my early days of flying the F4, as Courtney Mil will know from the times he was forced to sit on my wing during the early days of my formation lead training sorties. Therefore, I am pretty sure it is me with Neil B*** in the back seat returning from one of our numerous target sorties whilst JP an JN on 29 Sqn. We were crewed together by Roy T****** (OC A Flt) because, in his words " B*** couldn't find a target and even if he did S***** couldn't deal with it and therefore we only have one duff crew! Oh happy days being a JP!

Dude! On plus 5 on your wing was fine by me. On minus five in formation would have been way worse!

Happy days.

I concur with your analysis.

Lone Kestral,

Pretty harsh words from Trots (Neil wasn't that bad ), but then that was the sort of thing we had to deal with on C Flt. But none of his flight members from those days did too badly. And we know he loved us!! Look...

The best jammer the F4 ever had was a gent that never got the hang of making very short radio calls on exercises with the old Canberras around...

Courtney, dear boy, having had the pleasure (?) of sitting behind yourself & Lone Kestrel on several approaches, I'm amused that either of you can talk about 'on speeds'!! I seem to recall that if you got any where near 'on' then it was mentioned in the Station Magazine. On the occasion that one of you gave the 'on speed' a glancing blow, you were nominated for a Good Show in the Strike Command Flight Safety Comic, sadly not granted.

Anyway, I digress.

Were the pictures you posted taken at the Windsor re-union? I was contacted by the 'organiser' to see if I was interested then heard nothing so assumed it was a non-starter, really hacked off when I heard it had gone ahead.

Top F4 banter! Actually I always flew 19.2 units, Mate. Screw the speed!

The pics were indeed from there. I was surprised you weren't around because I think I saw your name was on the original contact list. I wonder what happened there?

Courtney

Gents

Sorry to change course with this title, but has anyone out there flown with former F-4 pilot George Begg? I flew with George when he had his Hunter
T-7 based at Exeter and I wondered what became of him.

Cheers

Basically Courtney, the man i/c spreading the word and organising attendance simply didn't do his job, I know that others were left it the dark after initial contact.

Neil B

Shivers down the spine of a slack 90 becoming a 120 crossing ahead to a 180 x0 going behind- did he ever find his way out of that paper bag ???
