Waterbeach Hunter Gate Guard - on the move tmr
The Hunter on the gate at Waterbeach Barracks is being moved to pastures new tomorrow. As a 'beach resident of 15 yrs, this is the start of the demise of village life.
I hope that the Pizza Hut with built-in Starbucks that'll be there in a couple of years does discounts for locals :-(
Hunter apparently off to Duxford according to the guys on the gate, so not a total loss at least.
Progress.

When I lived there (in the mid fifties), it was a Spitfire and Hurricane either side of the road up to the barrier, and the chaps on duty at the gate ( National Servicemen) didn't mind if us youngsters climbed all over them. We could wander around the airfield at the weekends with the exception of one area where a couple of armed Venoms and a man on guard stood. Apart from that there was no security at all.
We saw the Hunter on a family outing a couple of years ago,
I wonder what will happen to the artifacts /museum in the control tower?

I am not sure about 8 Sqns Hunter which is still at Barkston Heath as far as I know. The jet that is/was at Waterbeach was on long term display loan to the IWM anyway IIRC.
