Remember going to a party in the mess at Gutersloh sometime in the 70's where they had imported a lot of totty for the occasion. First thing they'd ask you was "Are you a Lightning pilot?" Somehow, replying that you were a Victor nav didn't quite cut it, and they'd soon be looking over your shoulder in search of a sky god to chat up.

Had one ride in a T4 and I'd have swapped my job for theirs in a second, although judging by my later efforts in a Cessna 172 it's as well I was never given the chance! Thought the Lightning was a great looker, although I have met a few dog-ugly Lightning pilots

and you could do it several times in a night and keep it up for quite a long time with a bit of help.

I've often wondered about Mrs BOAC's enigmatic smile! I thought it was SATISFACTION, now I realise it was RELIEF.

Hope she's well

Brian

Mrs B48N says you're not that ugly BOAC - but not up to Herc nav standard of course!

The Lightning, yawn...

Leap off into the stratosphere, stick your head into a rubber tube for 20 mins and fly around in circles, land in a panic. Call that flying?

It was THE type none of us wanted on my role disposal from Valley, everyone was after the new wonderjets, the Harrier, Phantom and Buccaneer. All apart from one weirdo who WANTED Lightnings as he had a huge desire to go somewhere sunny, and had worked out you had more of a chance on the type (Akrotiri, Tengah) as opposed to the rest which were all in Eastern Britain or North West Germany.
I hear he actually liked Leuchars.

What a dull course you must have been on pr00ne!

Harrier Phantom and Bucaneer wonder jets!!!! I think not! Two had navigators and the other shorter range than a Lightning plus loads of days living in a tent!!

My vote goes to the man who went to Leuchars!!

newt,

They WERE the wonderjets of the late sixties! Lightning was viewed by us as a tired old has been lacking investment or development. and a type that was difficult to operate and you did very little REAL flying. Now, the lovely irony is that the guys who REALLY got the sort of flying we all lusted after in terms of hours flown and variety, went to Hunters at Muharraq/Sharjah. NONE of us wanted that old dog. How wrong we were!

Bravo BOAC, I bow to your superior wit! Remarkable after all those single-seat years having no-one to practise on.

By the time my child bride met her first 'Sky God' ( our mutual friend's school mate D*** R***e of 74) it was too late. To make up for her error she gave birth to a Sky God - well one of the milk-sipping variety.

Talking of him, he could hardly contain his excitement the other day when he flew on an air test in a K model and sat in my old seat!

Well that narrows it down pr00ne! Same time as me and I seem to remember everyone being very pleased to get a Lightning post! But then again, there are always exceptions to the rule!!

The guys at MPC certainly kept us all entertained both on the airfield and in the Mess!! I certainly enjoyed my time on the beast!!

newt,

My memories of preferences and prejudices are obviously biased by my choice, which I got, of the toom.

I thought Valley a God awful place and was glad to get away. Don't recall much interaction with the STCAAME mob, don't recall much time for interaction with anyone to be honest. Bloody hard work and dire threats of what may happen if you fell below par, after all NOBODY wanted to go Vulcan or Canberra!
As an aside it was around then that an entire F-4 course went Vulcan, scary!

I suppose anything is a bitch to land if you don't know how to do it properly!

Blue plaque

He was trying to tell me the wording was 'Brian got lost again here' - the cheek of the younger generation!

pr00ne

Schoolmate I joined with in '65 went to Vulcans from Valley '67, much to his disgust as he wanted the Frightening. To add insult to injury he didn't get a command when the time came.
